The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, originally planned as a 2008 model, debuted in 2009. The compact Jetta, VW’s top seller, got an available diesel engine and a wagon body. The Jetta now comes in 4-door sedan or 4-door wagon nicknamed the SportWagen.
The 2009 diesel-fueled Jetta TDI is more powerful and 50-state certified in terms of emissions. The new Jetta lineups are also equipped stability control, heated seats and heated washer nozzles as standard equipment. Other upgrades include a touchscreen interface and a 30GB hard drive on the optional navigation system.
Both sedan and SportWagen are available in three trim levels: S, SE and SEL. The sporty GLI comes only in sedan and equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that can produce 200 horsepower. The same engine is also present on the SEL SportWagen. The S and SE versions have a 5-speed manual transmission, while the SEL wagon, TDI and GLI have a 6-speed manual. The SEL sedan comes standard with a 6-speed automatic, which is also available on other Jettas.
Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system; front-side, curtain-side and rear-side airbags. Available options include a navigation system, sunroof, and iPod adapter.
In summary, the 2009 Jetta is a comfortable car for daily commutes. Quiet and stable, the Jetta is easy to steer, although body roll is significant when cornering enthusiastically. With the TDI, however, expect more vibration and noise. Yet like other diesel engines, it has a low-end torque and feels quite muscular around town.
